Genealogy

One of our most frequently requested services is assistance with genealogical projects, either with the patron’s own family or another individual who is of importance to their research. Not only is the Archives in possession of records that are of great genealogical value, such as probate files and other legal records, but we also have a great number of subject files that were compiled from the research of previous patrons.

Although most of the aforementioned materials are usually only applicable for individuals and families that have lived in Clay County for a long time, having roots in the county is not a requirement. The number of physical records that we will be able to show you may be limited, but the Archives has access to a variety of genealogy tools (AncestryDNA, Newspapers.com, etc.) that allows our staff to help anyone who wishes to dig into their family history.

To ensure that the Archives staff will be able to pull relevant materials, we suggest compiling the following information before your visit, if known:

  • Full name
  • Alternate spellings/nicknames
  • Birth/death date(s)
  • Place of birth, death, and residence
  • Name of parents

For any questions, call (904) XXX-XXXX or request an appointment using the key word “genealogy” in the subject field.
